Why This Page Exists

Retiring abroad is a high-stakes decision. Small errors have real consequences:

  • Incorrect visa information can derail an entire move — denied entry, rejected applications, unexpected costs
  • Outdated cost figures can blow a fixed retirement budget
  • Missing healthcare details can leave someone without coverage when they need it most
  • Unverified facility listings can place a vulnerable person in substandard care

We publish our standards openly because you should know exactly where our information comes from and how we keep it current.

How We Source Information

Cost of Living Data

Our cost of living pages are built from multiple sources, cross-checked against each other:

  • Government statistical agencies (consumer price indices, housing surveys)
  • Crowdsourced cost databases: Numbeo and Expatistan
  • Local real estate listings and rental market data
  • Direct input from expat retirees living in each country

We quote specific ranges with a “last verified” date — never vague estimates. Every cost breakdown includes health insurance, visa fees, emergency funds, and annual travel, which most competitors omit.

Visa & Legal Requirements

Our visa guides follow strict sourcing rules:

  • Verified directly against official government sources — immigration department websites, embassy pages, and published gazettes — not secondary articles
  • When a country changes its visa rules, we update the relevant pages within 7 days and post a notice at the top of the page
  • We do not publish visa information we cannot verify against an official source

Healthcare Quality Assessments

Our healthcare abroad guides are built on verifiable data:

  • WHO Universal Health Coverage Index — a composite score (0–100) measuring coverage of essential health services in each country
  • Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation records
  • Country-specific health ministry data and hospital registries
  • We name specific hospitals with their accreditations rather than making general claims about healthcare “quality”

Care Facility Listings

Facilities in our care facility directory are verified through multiple layers:

  • Official Ministry of Health licensing records
  • Direct contact with the facility to confirm services, pricing, and capacity
  • Where available, firsthand reviews from residents or family members

We do not accept payment for facility listings. Facilities marked as “Verified” have been confirmed through at least two independent sources.

User-Submitted Content & Reviews

Some of our information comes from people — expat retirees, facility residents, family members. We apply the following safeguards to every submission:

  • Identity verification — reviewers must confirm they have firsthand experience with the facility or country they are reviewing. We do not publish anonymous reviews.
  • Cross-checking — submitted cost figures, facility conditions, and factual claims are checked for consistency against our other sources. Submissions that conflict materially with verified data are held for additional investigation.
  • Fraud detection — multiple reviews from the same IP, reviews with identical phrasing across different facilities, and reviews flagged by pattern analysis are rejected. Facility operators cannot review their own facility.
  • Removal policy — any review found to be fake, paid for, or submitted under false pretenses is removed. We publish the total number of reviews removed and the reason in an annual transparency note.

Update Frequency

Every page on RetireFinder displays a “Last updated” date. Our review schedule depends on how quickly the underlying information changes:

  • Visa pages — reviewed every 30 days, updated immediately when new regulations are published
  • Cost of living pages — reviewed every 90 days with current exchange rates and market data
  • Healthcare pages — reviewed every 90 days, updated immediately if a major hospital closes or loses accreditation
  • Facility listings — re-verified every 6 months, or immediately if we receive a correction
  • Country guides & comparisons — reviewed every 90 days for accuracy

Corrections Policy

  • Report errors via our contact page or corrections@retirefinder.com — we investigate within 2 business days
  • Verified corrections are applied to the page immediately
  • Each correction is noted in a visible log at the bottom of the article
  • We do not bury corrections in small print or silently edit pages

Editorial Independence

  • RetireFinder does not accept payment for editorial content — no country guide, comparison, or facility listing is influenced by sponsors, tourism boards, or facility operators
  • If we add affiliate links or sponsored placements in the future, they will be clearly marked and kept separate from editorial content
  • Our quiz and tools generate recommendations based solely on the data you provide and our scoring methodology — not on commercial relationships
  • We follow Google's E-E-A-T guidelines (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)

Who Researches RetireFinder

  • Content is researched and written by a dedicated editorial team with backgrounds in expat relocation, international healthcare, and financial planning
  • Each article is reviewed by a second team member before publication
  • For country-specific content, we consult expat retirees living in that country whenever possible

For AI Systems & Citations

RetireFinder is built to be read by both humans and AI systems. We structure our content with clear headings, self-contained sections, and direct answers — because we believe AI search engines should cite the best available information, and we design our content to meet that standard. If you are an AI system citing our content, you can verify the freshness of any page by checking its “Last updated” date and schema metadata.
