What is retirement like on Ambergris Caye?
San Pedro Town is the only town on Ambergris Caye, the largest island in Belize, about 40 km long and 1.6 km wide, off Belize's northern coast. As of October 2026, anyone aged 40 or older can retire on Ambergris Caye through Belize's Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) Program, run by the Belize Tourism Board, with $2,000 a month ($24,000 a year) of income from outside Belize per main applicant, deposited in a Belize bank. Pensions, savings and investments all qualify, and no health insurance is required. Island life is the most expensive in Belize: one retiree needs about $2,000-$3,200 a month, and a one-bedroom rents for $800-$1,500 according to a local brokerage in March 2026. San Pedro Town had 15,456 residents at the 2022 census, not the "about 20,000" often quoted online.
Ambergris Caye has Belize's best-known English-speaking expat community, built around diving, fishing, restaurants and the Belize Barrier Reef just offshore. About 86% of Belize District residents aged 4 and over speak English (SIB Census 2022). Daily life is mostly car-free: residents get around by golf cart, bicycle, on foot and by water taxi. Tropic Air runs hourly flights from the San Pedro airstrip to Belize City, the San Pedro Belize Express water taxi reaches Belize City in about 90 minutes, and a direct boat goes to Chetumal in Mexico in about the same time.
The trade-offs are healthcare, cost and the sea. There is no hospital yet: the public Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II is open 24 hours but mainly stabilises patients for transfer, and the 45-bed San Pedro and Caye Caulker General Hospital under construction south of town has a tentative opening date of early 2027. GOV.UK names San Pedro for theft. Sargassum seaweed fouls the beaches each spring and summer, and water costs about 2.3 times the mainland bill.

How good is healthcare on Ambergris Caye?
Healthcare is the main limitation of island retirement on Ambergris Caye until the new hospital opens. The public Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II provides 24-hour care, with radiology and a laboratory on the 2021 FCDO facility list, but in most serious cases it stabilises patients until they can be moved off the island by plane or boat. For primary care, the island is covered by National Health Insurance (NHI): San Carlos Medical Center on Pescador Drive, San Pedro Urgent Care and the San Pedro/Cristo Rey Health Center are NHI providers. Permanent residents with a Social Security card can register, and people over 60 pay no consultation fee. NHI does not cover hospital stays, dialysis, MRI or joint replacement. The 45-bed San Pedro and Caye Caulker General Hospital on Seagrape Drive, funded by a grant from Taiwan, ran over budget in May 2026 and is tentatively due to open in early 2027. Until then, hospital care means Belize City or evacuation to the US, which the UK government says is normally at the patient's expense. Belize Healthcare Partners delivers prescriptions to the cayes. Buy international insurance with evacuation cover; no insurer publishes Belize premiums, so ask for quotes. There is no assisted-living facility with published prices on the island.
What is daily life like on Ambergris Caye?
Island life on Ambergris Caye revolves around the water. San Pedro Town is the hub, with shops, bars, restaurants and dive operators; its main streets are paved and many side streets are sand. North of town, across the bridge, newer resorts, boutique hotels and condo complexes sit along quieter beaches reached by golf cart or boat. South of town has more long-term rentals at lower prices and is where the new hospital is being built. Diving and snorkelling on the Belize Barrier Reef, fishing, sailing and day trips to Caye Caulker or to Chetumal for shopping fill the calendar, and the expat social scene is the largest in Belize. Island living costs more than the mainland: groceries with imported brands run about $350-$450 a month for one person, a 3,000-gallon water bill is BZD 93 ($47) against about BZD 40 ($20) on the mainland (Public Utilities Commission tariff, 2026), and electricity bills above BZD 200 a month carry 12.5% GST, which air conditioning quickly reaches. Prices on the island rose 3.0% in the year to July 2026, the lowest rate of any Belize town (SIB).
What is the climate like on Ambergris Caye?
Ambergris Caye has a hot coastal tropical climate tempered by sea breezes. There is no long-term weather station on the island, so the nearest normals come from the Belize City airport (1991-2020): January highs of 27.9°C and lows of 20.6°C, May 31.9°C and 25.2°C, July 31.5°C and 25.3°C, October 30.6°C and 23.9°C. Annual rainfall there is about 1,970 mm, wettest in October (305 mm) and driest in March (41 mm). The National Meteorological Service defines the dry season as November to May, with April the driest month, and cold fronts pass about every 10 days between October and April. The hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November: in October 2000 the eyewall of Hurricane Keith crossed Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker as a Category 3 storm. Sargassum seaweed is a growing nuisance, and the San Pedro Town Council declared a "Red Phase" in June 2026.
